Another blockbuster deal?

According to some reports on MLB.com the Yankees are close to obtaining Javier Vazquez from the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Melky Cabrera and some minor leaguers.

Vazquez was 15-10 with a 2.87 ERA and had 238 strikeouts.
Cabrera batted .274 with 13 homeruns and 68 RBIS.

Vazquez pitched for the Yankees in 2004 posting 14 wins and a 4.91 ERA.

Once this trade becomes finalized, the details will be on the blog.

Free Agents the Mets Should go After

Look, I'm no Mets fan, but there no way around the fact that the Mets could be one of the biggest free agent spenders out there. There are a few players that the Mets should go for.

I have made a Top 5 list of postion players and a Top 3 list of pitchers the Mets should attempt to go after...

POSITION PLAYERS

5. VLAD GUERRERO:

The Mets need a major outfielder and a reason to draw fans into the stands at Citi Field. Vlad Guerrero can hit homeruns and is a powerful gap to gap hitter. Citi Field is perfect for him. Vlad also has playoff experience and has produced in the playoffs with the Angels. If the Mets sign him, that would hopefully inspire a playoff run.

4. JERMAINE DYE:

Most of the people on this position player list are outfielders (3 out of 5) Anyway, Dye hit 25 homeruns for the White sox last season and is a notable power threat. His batting average is decent and he'll get on base a good part of the time. He is also less injury proned then Vlad Guerrero.

3. ORLANDO HUDSON:

All Mets fans have been complaining about Luis Castillo so here is a solution. Sign Orlando Hudson. He batted .283 last season with 9 homeruns and over 60 RBIS. He is one of the best defensive second basemen in the game. He owns multiple gold glove awards.

2. MARK DEROSA:

The Mets need a solid player that can play all the postions. That player also needs to hit well and play solid defense. Say hello to Mark DeRosa. DeRosa despite batting .250 had 23 homeruns and drove in over 70 runs. He played third base last season, but he can play second base, shortstop and the outfield. DeRosa would fit perfectfully for the Mets.

1. JASON BAY:

Jason Bay was a dominating force for the Red Sox last season. Hitting over 30 hoemruns and driving in over 110 RBIS, Bay could change any game for his team. According to some reports, the Mets are in the market for Jason Bay and are going after him. The only question is will they offer him the 5th year in the deal. The Mets could really use him too.

PITCHING

3. JON GARLAND:

Garland despite going 11-13 last season, had pitched over 200 innings and had a decent ERA of 4.01. He had a good year and is better then what the Mets have now.

2. JASON MARQUIS:

Marquis had a record of 15-13 with an ERA just over 4.00. His constant pitching with the Colarado Rockies is great because any ERA will be increased in Coors Field. If he goes to the Mets, you can expect an ERA closer to 3.40 and probably 15-17 wins.

1. JOEL PINERO:

Joel had 15 wins and an ERA of 3.49 last season. The reason he is ahead of Marquis is because of his playoff experience and that fact he played and learned to win from teammates such as Chris Carpenter and Matt Holliday.

This is the list of players and the reasons why the Mets should go after them.

Nick Johnson replaces Johnny Damon?

The Yankees have signed Nick Johnson to a one year 5.5 million dollar deal. Nick Johnson batted .292 with 8 homeruns and an on base percentage of .426 last season. Johnson is expected to be the everyday DH and bat second in the lineup. The only question is will the Yankees go after Johnny Damon now that they have the solid number two hitter?

If you look at the stats, Nick Johnson is the better number two hitter. The goal of the number two hitter is situational hitting. Nick Johnson batted .292 and compared to Johnny Damon's .282, that could make a lot of difference when you are in a big game.

Damon has more homeruns then Johnson (24-8) and more then double the RBIS. However, consider the teams that Johnson played for last season. He played for the Marlins and the Nationals. Both teams do not provide a solid leadoff hitter. (Derek Jeter has a higher on base percentage then either of their leadoff hitters)

Plus the power should improve for Johnson because both parks in Florida and Washington are huge down the lines, while Yankee Stadium is 314 ft (down the right field line) and 318 ft (down the left field line). Johnson should hit 10-15 homeruns at the least. The gaps in Yankee Stadium should also give Johnson a lot of doubles and raise his batting average.

My prediction for Nick Johnson next season is a .310 Batting Average, 15 homeruns and 65 RBIS. He will be just as productive as Johnny Damon would've been if we resigned him. If you look on the bright side, we have a younger, and cheaper version of Johnny Damon in Nick Johnson!
